During the Euro 2024 football championships, Thai authorities launched a comprehensive crackdown on illegal betting activities, resulting in the arrest of 3,863 suspects and the shutdown of more than 200 gambling websites. This month-long operation, coinciding with the tournament from June 14 to July 14, aimed to curb the anticipated surge in gambling activities.
Over 200 websites shut down
Thai police confirmed the closure of 224 local gambling websites, leading to the arrest of 846 individuals connected to these sites. Among those detained were 145 operators believed to be running these illegal platforms and 701 gamblers. The Bangkok Post reported that these websites saw over TBH2.4 billion (€60.7million) in circulation.
Arrests in physical gambling dens
The crackdown wasn’t limited to online activities. Police arrested 3,017 individuals in physical gambling dens, including 50 alleged bookmakers and 2,944 gamblers. Assistant National Police Chief Pol Lt Gen Akradet Pimolsri highlighted the extensive reach of the operation. He said the arrests and shutdowns reflect the Thai authorities’ commitment to curbing illegal gambling activities across all platforms.
The anti-gambling operation extended beyond the capital Bangkok, with regions like Surat Thani playing a proactive role in targeting potential gambling hotspots in Thailand. Police Major General Soempun Sirikong led raids in these areas, emphasising the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, military, and community volunteers in tackling illegal betting during the high-stakes football event.
Financial and public interest safeguarding
This large-scale operation demonstrates Thai authorities’ stringent stance against the intersection of sports and illegal gambling. By dismantling these networks, the police said they aim to protect the public interest and mitigate the financial impact of unauthorised gambling activities. The crackdown, which officially concluded before the Euro 2024 final match between Spain and England, underscores the importance of sustained efforts in combating such illicit activities.
In the Euro 2024 finals, Spain sealed their fourth Euro Cup title, defeating England 2-1. As the tournament ended, authorities in Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining order and preventing illegal gambling, ensuring that the focus remains on the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play.
